Geographical information on Cupertino. Cupertino is a city in Santa Clara County, California, in the United States. Cupertino is located on the western side of the Santa Clara Valley, with parts reaching into the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, . It is situated just west of San Jose. According to the 2020 census, there were 60,381 people living there. Apple Inc. is based in the city and has its headquarters at Apple Park. Although it saw industrial activity in the early 19th century, Cupertino was formally founded in 1955 and was named for a local brook by the cartographer of Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza under the name Saint Joseph of Cupertino. Initially, the region was an agricultural hamlet that produced cherries, apricots, and prunes; by the 19th century, a winery had joined the ranks. Due to the post-World War II suburban housing boom, Cupertino expanded rapidly in the 1950s, coinciding with the early stages of Silicon Valley’s development close to Cupertino. By the 1960s, office parks were being constructed and major firms, like Apple and Hewlett-Packard, were establishing offices in the city. Arroyo San José de Cupertino (today Stevens Creek) inspired the name Cupertino. The cartographer for Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza had given the brook its name in honor of Saint Joseph of Cupertino. When San Francisco lawyer and historian John T. Doyle gave his winery on McClellan Road the name Cupertino, it became the first commonly used name. West Side, the previous name for the area, was replaced by Cupertino at the turn of the 20th century. At the intersection of Stevens Creek Road and Saratoga-Mountain View Road (also referred to locally as Highway 9; later Saratoga–Sunnyvale Road, and finally De Anza Boulevard within Cupertino city boundaries), Cupertino was a tiny rural community in the 19th century. The R. Cali Brothers Feed Mill, which is now replaced by the Cali Mill Plaza and City Hall, dominated the southeast corner of the crossroads for many years. It was a part of Fremont Township back then and was referred to as the West Side. Fruit farming constituted the main economic activity. Pruning, plum, apricot, and cherry orchards covered nearly all of the land inside Cupertino’s current borders.
