The City of Industry is a city in eastern Los Angeles County, California, in the San Gabriel Valley. As of the 2020 census, the city had only 264 citizens, making it the third least populated city in the state. It is virtually exclusively industrial, with over 3,000 enterprises employing 67,000 people. Since its incorporation on June 18, 1957, it has developed into the San Gabriel Valley’s economic center.
The City of Industry is situated on property that was once Rancho La Puente, a rancho grant from the Mexican era. In 1841, Alta California Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado granted a property grant for Rancho La Puente to William and Nicolasa Workman, who had arrived from Mexico together with John Rowland and others. Eventually, the ranch expanded to about 49,000 acres. During the Gold Rush, the Workmans made a name for themselves as cattle ranchers and prospered financially, bringing fresh beef to the gold fields. In 1917, the Workman House and surrounding acreage were purchased by Walter P. Temple, the grandson of the Workmans, and his wife, Laura, after their son discovered oil on land they owned in the Montebello hills. Currently known as the Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum, this property is a free public museum and heritage site located in the modern City of Industry. Tract 1343, which was established in the 1910s, depicts a significant amount of the city’s borders in 2017. The Southern Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads were constructed along the San Jose Creek valley in what is now Industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In what is now Industry, the Union Pacific would build a sizable railyard at the Marne siding. The future City of Industry was also traversed by Valley Boulevard, a vital thoroughfare that connected Los Angeles with locations to the east. The construction of warehouses, which became a significant component of Industry’s economy, was facilitated by the railroads and Valley Boulevard. On June 18, 1957, the City of Industry became a charter city. The City of Industry drafted a comprehensive plan to direct its future development little under fifteen years after it was incorporated. The 1971 document is still in force in 2020, over fifty years later. Planning consultants Gruen Associates, founded in 1950 by Austrian-born architect and urban planner Victor Gruen, were in charge of the plan.
