The city of Fremont is located in California’s Alameda County. With 230,504 residents as of 2020, Fremont, which is in the East Bay area of the Bay Area, is the fourth most populated city in the Bay Area, behind Oakland, San Francisco, and San Jose. On the location of the Ohlone town of Oroysom, the Mission was founded. The tribe inhabited areas further eastward between what is now San Francisco and Monterey. They inhabited dome-shaped dwellings constructed from woven tule or redwood bark. They were mostly hunter-gatherers; women collected nuts, berries, and root vegetables, while males hunted and captured bears, elk, deer, ducks, and rabbits. Because of the abundance of fish and shellfish, the Ohlone people lived next to rivers and estuaries. Men wore capes made of feathers or animal hides in the winter and wore little to nothing in the warmer months. The Ohlone men’s attire was determined by ceremonies in addition to the weather. The women wore tule or bark shreds for skirts and deerskin aprons over them. The tribe lived in peace until 1769, when Spanish soldiers and missionaries came to California in an effort to convert the Native Americans to Catholicism and increase Spanish authority in the Americas. The Franciscan priests welcomed the Ohlone into their missions to live and work, but they did not intimidate them. The Native Americans employed tools made of wood, stone, and animal bones prior to the arrival of missions. They learned how to produce metal tools and weapons from the missionaries, and priests also demonstrated how to make adobe bricks. Then, instead of being used by the tribe, the bricks were used to construct missions. In addition to encouraging the Ohlone to pursue farming and ranching rather than hunting and gathering, the Spaniards imported cattle, pigs, and sheep. The Ohlone were compelled to convert to Christianity and to abandon the superstitious beliefs that bound them to the natural world in order to live in the missions. In addition, food shortages brought on by overcrowding and diseases introduced by the Spanish to the tribe resulted in several fatalities and problems that affected many lives.
